Medtronic's Mobile Content Management System (mCMS) application enables sales reps to download collateral from Oracle WebCenter into folders on their iPad. Folders can be created by products and therapies for diabetes, heart disease and other ailments. This along with the iPad's instant-access and 10-hour battery life features enable sales reps to quickly call up the latest videos, presentations, and PDFs - all on a device weighing less than 2 pounds. If reps do not have a Wi-Fi or 3G connection, they can still access any downloaded content in offline mode. They can also verify that downloaded content is the latest version by clicking on the Synch button from the application, which sends a request back to WebCenter to check for content updates. Overall, these mobile ECM capabilities have made meetings more productive and follow up easier. For instance, the mCMS application includes an email function allowing sales reps to email product literature during or immediately after meetings.
Medtronic has nearly 2,500 Mobile Content Management System (mCMS) users across 11 global regions, and these users access over 3,500 pieces of content. Business units have rolled out the mCMS solution independent of their IT team due to demo materials on the application and overall ease of use. In fact, IT at Medtronic has limited itself as a bottleneck by delegating administration, allowing some metadata to be managed by the business, and providing a security model ensuring over 85% of Medtronic's workforce have the correct authorization upon first use. The solution has helped Medtronic extend the benefits of their WebCenter system throughout their organization leading to increased adoption, and the fact that sales reps can now travel and go to numerous meetings with just their iPads is quite liberating. Lastly, the ability to share product information quickly and accurately on such a familiar and interactive platform as the iPad has provided a competitive advantage.
